About Ken Hunt
Kenneth Lawrence Hunt grew up in Grand Forks, North Dakota, where he was a boyhood friend and, later, a Yankees roommate of Roger Maris. Signed by New York for a $10,000 bonus in 1952, the right-handed-hitting outfielder worked his way through the Yankees' system for seven seasons — hitting .500 in his pro debut at Olean, then .322 with 21 home runs at Shreveport in 1959 before a September call-up. Hunt made the Yankees out of 1960 spring training and appears on card #522 of Topps' short-printed high-number series (#507-572), a scarce rookie card today. Left unprotected after the season, he was drafted 40th by the expansion Los Angeles Angels and started the franchise's first-ever game in center field. In 1961 he hit a career-best 25 home runs with 84 RBIs at cozy Wrigley Field, one of five Angels to top 20 homers that inaugural season. Shoulder aneurysm surgery in 1962 derailed his career; he finished in 1964 with Washington, batting .226 over six seasons.
