About Pete Whisenant
Thomas Peter Whisenant signed with the Boston Braves as a 17-year-old free agent, developed in their farm system, and debuted in 1952 — the franchise's final season in Boston — after missing 1951 to military service. A right-handed reserve outfielder, he moved to St. Louis in 1955 and to the Cubs in 1956, posting his best season as Chicago's starting center fielder: .239, 11 homers, 46 RBIs. Cincinnati acquired him that winter — the club on his 1960 Topps card (#424, issued with both white and scarcer gray backs in high-number Series 5). By the time it reached shelves, the Reds had sold him to Cleveland, then Washington; on May 15, 1960, he was mistakenly sent up to pinch-hit for the Indians minutes after that trade closed, reportedly the only player to appear in a box score for a team he wasn't on. He closed his career with Cincinnati in 1961 and coached under Fred Hutchinson. Career: .224, 37 homers, 134 RBIs in 475 games.
