1960 Topps #265 Rip Repulski

About Rip Repulski
Rip Repulski's 1960 Topps card, #265, shows him with the Los Angeles Dodgers shortly before a midseason trade sent him to Boston. Born Eldon John Repulski in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, he signed with the Cardinals out of St. Cloud State and won the St. Louis center-field job as a rookie in 1953, finishing behind Junior Gilliam, Harvey Haddix and Ray Jablonski in NL Rookie of the Year voting. His best years came in 1954-55, when he hit 19 and 23 home runs, and he made the 1956 All-Star team, pinch-hitting against Whitey Ford. Dealt to Philadelphia in the Del Ennis trade, then to Los Angeles in 1958 for Sparky Anderson, he won a World Series ring as a Dodgers reserve in 1959. Sent to Boston for Nelson Chittum in 1960, he homered in his first American League at-bat. He hit .269 with 106 homers over nine seasons. Cardinals farmhands hung the nickname "Rip" on him, replacing the "Al" his Minnesota friends had always used; he later ran a St. Cloud cocktail lounge, regaling patrons with tales of his playing days until his death in 1993.
