About Willie Jones

Willie Edward Jones — "Puddin' Head" to Philadelphia fans, a nickname pulled from a 1933 Rudy Vallee novelty song about a slow-talking Southern boy — was the Phillies' regular third baseman from 1949 through 1959. A cornerstone of the 1950 "Whiz Kids," the franchise's first National League champions since 1915, he set career highs with 25 home runs and 88 RBIs and started at third for the NL in that year's All-Star Game, going 1-for-7 in a then-record seven plate appearances; he hit .286 in the World Series sweep by the Yankees. A two-time All-Star (1950-51), Jones led NL third basemen in fielding percentage six times and putouts seven times — good enough that Hall of Famer Pie Traynor, asked to compare their defense, said simply, "He's better than I was." Traded to Cleveland in June 1959, then sold to Cincinnati weeks later, Jones is shown here on his 1960 Topps card as a part-time Reds third baseman; he hit .268 in 79 games that season before his release in May 1961 closed out a 15-year career.
