1960 Topps #290 Jerry Lumpe

About Jerry Lumpe
Jerry Lumpe broke into pro ball in 1951 after Yankees scout Tom Greenwade — the same scout who found Mickey Mantle — signed him out of Missouri. A left-handed-hitting infielder, he reached New York in 1956 and won back-to-back American League pennants, starting at third base in both the 1957 and 1958 World Series and earning a championship ring in the latter. Traded to the Kansas City Athletics in May 1959, Lumpe became the club's regular second baseman in 1960 — the season pictured on this card — batting .271 with a team-high 156 hits. He broke out further in 1961 and 1962, hitting .293 and then a career-best .301 with 10 home runs and 83 RBIs. Traded to Detroit after the 1963 season in the deal that sent Rocky Colavito to Kansas City, he made the Tigers' 1964 American League All-Star team. Lumpe retired in 1967, later coached the division-winning 1971 Oakland Athletics, and was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1994.
