About Bob Keegan
Bob Keegan didn't reach the majors until age 32, but the right-hander made it count across six seasons with the Chicago White Sox (1953-1958). A Bucknell product who flew B-24 missions in World War II, he spent a dozen minor-league seasons in the Yankees' chain before a dominant 1952 at Syracuse (20 wins, a league-leading 273 innings) got him purchased by Chicago. He won 16 games in 1954 and made that year's All-Star team, then delivered his career's signature moment on August 20, 1957: a complete-game no-hitter against the Washington Senators, walking two and striking out only one. Teammates called him "Smiley" - ace Billy Pierce said he always looked like he was grinning, even when he wasn't. Squeezed from Chicago's 1958 rotation by the Early Wynn trade, Keegan went home to the Rochester Red Wings, the Cardinals' top farm club, and won 18 games in 1959 - the tie behind this card. A big-league recall never came, and 1960 proved his final season. He finished 40-36 with a 3.66 ERA over 644 2/3 innings.
