1960 Topps #292 Dodger Backstops
On this card: Joe Pignatano, John Roseboro

About this card
This is one of the eleven combo cards scattered through the 1960 Topps set, each pairing two or three players under a nickname headline rather than giving one man his own card.
The players on this card
Card #292 pairs the two catchers who inherited Roy Campanella's mask after his January 1958 car accident ended his career. John Roseboro, with barely two full seasons behind the plate in the minors, won the starting job within weeks of the Dodgers' arrival in Los Angeles and never let go, catching L.A. to the 1959 pennant and a six-game World Series win over the White Sox; he went on to two Gold Gloves and a four-time All-Star career across a decade as the club's primary receiver. Joe Pignatano, a Brooklyn native who'd caught the final innings of the Dodgers' last game at Ebbets Field in 1957, settled in as Roseboro's backup and made his mark in the '59 stretch drive, breaking up a double play at Seals Stadium to key a sweep of the Giants, then singling in the 12th inning of the pennant-clinching playoff win over Milwaukee. He appeared in Game Five of that World Series before moving on to Kansas City in 1961.
