About Gene Conley
Gene Conley is the only man to hold championship rings in both Major League Baseball and the NBA. A 6-foot-8 right-hander out of Washington State, he signed with the Braves in 1950, won consecutive Minor League Player of the Year honors, and stuck for good with Milwaukee in 1954, making the National League All-Star team as a rookie. He was an All-Star again in 1955, then was part of the Braves' 1957 World Series championship team over the Yankees, making one relief appearance. All the while Conley moonlighted at forward for the Boston Celtics, winning three straight NBA titles from 1959 to 1961. Traded to Philadelphia in March 1959, he turned in his finest big-league season that year - a dozen wins, a 3.00 ERA, and a third career All-Star game appearance in which he struck out Ted Williams and Yogi Berra - before a broken hand, suffered while batting, cut it short. This 1960 Topps card catches him mid-Phillies stint; that December he was traded to the Red Sox for Frank Sullivan, a swap Conley called the "biggest trade in baseball" since he stood two inches taller than the man he was dealt for.
