1973 Topps #406 Paul Lindblad

About Paul Lindblad
Lindblad routinely wore his 1973 World Series ring, the one he prized most, even though it originally contained no diamonds. His fourth-series card, #406, identifies him with Oakland. In Game 2 of the Series, he entered in the 12th inning after the Mets had taken a 7-6 lead. Mike Andrews mishandled two groundballs behind him, and three more runs scored.
Paul Lindblad was a left-handed pitcher who spent 14 major league seasons, 1965 through 1978, almost entirely as a reliever. He debuted with the Kansas City Athletics on September 15, 1965, followed the franchise to Oakland in 1968, and later pitched for the Washington Senators, Texas Rangers and New York Yankees. After beginning his career as a minor league starter, he moved into middle and long relief. He set a major league record for a pitcher by playing 385 consecutive games without an error, a streak that ran from 1966 to 1974. Lindblad won World Series titles with Oakland in 1973 and 1974 and with the Yankees in 1978. In Game 3 of the 1973 Series against the Mets, he earned the win with two shutout innings and became the last pitcher to face Willie Mays. He finished 68-63 with a 3.29 ERA and 64 saves. After retiring he worked as a minor league pitching coach and as a custom home builder. He died January 1, 2006, in Arlington, Texas.
