About 1974 World Series Game 4
Card #464 revisits Game 4 of the 1974 World Series, played October 16 at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum before 49,347 fans. Oakland had already beaten Baltimore in the American League Championship Series, and the Dodgers had ousted Pittsburgh in the National League Championship Series, but by Game 4 the A's led the World Series two games to one. Dodgers starter Andy Messersmith surrendered a third-inning solo home run to Oakland's own pitcher, Ken Holtzman, then watched a 2-1 Los Angeles lead evaporate in the sixth, when the A's scored four times -- Sal Bando and Dick Green each drove in a run, and pinch-hitter Jim Holt added a two-run single. Holtzman worked into the game for the win, with bullpen ace Rollie Fingers closing it out, and Oakland's 5-2 victory pushed the club to the brink of a third straight championship, clinched the next night. Fingers, who pitched in three of Oakland's four wins, was named World Series MVP.
