About Al Cowens
Al Cowens broke into the majors with the Kansas City Royals in 1974, the season his 1975 Topps #437 card - his recognized rookie card - captures. A 75th-round pick out of Centennial High in Compton, California, in the 1969 draft, the right fielder claimed an everyday job by 1976 and peaked in 1977, batting .312 with 23 home runs and 112 RBI, winning a Gold Glove, and finishing runner-up to Rod Carew in AL MVP voting. Cowens helped Kansas City to three straight AL West titles from 1976 through 1978, though the Royals lost each ALCS to the Yankees. Traded to California in December 1979, he was dealt to Detroit that May and sold to Seattle in 1982, finishing his 13-year career in 1986 with a .270 average, 108 homers, and 717 RBI. He was scouting for the Royals when he died in 2002.
