About Don Carrithers

Donald George Carrithers, a right-handed pitcher born September 15, 1949, in Lynwood, California, was taken by the San Francisco Giants in the third round of the 1967 draft out of Lynwood High School, where he was a teammate of future Giants hurler Jim Barr. He debuted in the majors on August 1, 1970, and spent four seasons shuttling between San Francisco's rotation and bullpen before a March 1974 trade sent him to the Montreal Expos for catcher John Boccabella. His 1975 Topps card (#438) catches him in an Expos uniform during his most productive big-league stretch; he set a career high with 140 innings pitched in 1976, though a 6-12 record and 4.43 ERA that season led Montreal to sell his contract to the Minnesota Twins. A serious April 1977 car crash outside Minneapolis, which also ended teammate Mike Pazik's major-league career, limited Carrithers to five more outings before he retired at 28 with a 28-32 record and 4.45 ERA over parts of eight seasons.
