About Ed Brinkman

Ed Brinkman was a slick-fielding shortstop who spent his prime with the Washington Senators and Detroit Tigers. A three-sport star at Cincinnati's Western Hills High, where he was Pete Rose's teammate and, by reputation, the bigger prospect, Brinkman signed with the Senators in 1961 for a bonus reported as high as $75,000 and debuted in the majors that September at age 19. He anchored Washington's infield through 1970, then came to Detroit in the October 1970 trade that sent Denny McLain to the Senators. In 1972 he set American League fielding records for shortstops — 72 consecutive errorless games and a .990 fielding percentage — won a Gold Glove, and was voted Tiger of the Year as Detroit captured the AL East. He made his only All-Star team in 1973. His 1975 Topps card, issued in a season that carried him from Detroit to St. Louis, Texas, and New York, closed out a 15-year career built on glove work over bat.
