About Bill Butler

William Franklin Butler made his major-league debut in the Kansas City Royals' second game ever, throwing five innings of one-hit relief and striking out six after entering against Harmon Killebrew and the Twins. The left-hander from Herndon, Virginia went on to post a 9-10 record with a team-high 156 strikeouts and four shutouts that 1969 rookie season, earning a spot on Topps' Rookie All-Star team, and that August he threw the first one-hitter in Royals history. His numbers faded over the next two seasons; Cleveland purchased him in 1972, then packaged him to Minnesota in an October 1973 trade. Butler's 1975 Topps card catches him in the second of three seasons in Minnesota, shuttling between the Twins and their Tacoma farm club. He closed out a seven-year career with a brief 1977 return engagement before finishing up in the Dodgers' organization at Albuquerque.
