About Charlie Sands

Charles Duane Sands, a left-handed-hitting catcher out of Newport News, Virginia, was picked by the Baltimore Orioles in the 21st round of the 1965 draft before breaking into the majors with the New York Yankees on June 21, 1967, at age 19. After several years in the minors, he resurfaced with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1971 and shared in the franchise's National League pennant and World Series championship that fall, drawing his only Series at-bat as a sixth-inning pinch-hitter in Game 2 — a strikeout against future Hall of Famer Jim Palmer. Sands split 1973 and 1974 between catcher and designated hitter for the California Angels, then moved to the Oakland Athletics for 1975, playing his final big-league games that May. His 1975 Topps card still shows him with the Angels, the team he had last played a full season for. Across six seasons he batted .214 with 6 home runs and 23 RBI in 93 games. He died in 2016 at age 68.
