About Ralph Garr

Ralph Allen Garr, born December 12, 1945, in Monroe, Louisiana, starred at Grambling State University before Atlanta drafted him in the third round of the 1967 draft. Nicknamed "Road Runner" for his blazing speed, a tag the Braves celebrated by running animated Looney Tunes Road Runner clips on the scoreboard and sounding a calliope "beep-beep" whenever he reached base. Garr debuted with Atlanta in 1968 and won the left-field job for good in 1971, becoming a free-swinging lefty who sprayed hits to all fields and batted .300 or better five times. His career year came in 1974: a league-leading .353 average with 214 hits and 17 triples, the NL batting title, and his only All-Star selection, feats commemorated on his 1975 Topps League Leaders card (#306) alongside his Braves base card (#550). Traded to the Chicago White Sox after 1975, Garr later played for the California Angels, finishing a 13-year career in 1980 with a .306 average and more than 1,500 hits. Atlanta inducted him into its team Hall of Fame in 2006.
