1975 Topps #545 Billy Williams

About Billy Williams
Billy Leo Williams broke in with the Chicago Cubs in 1959 and spent the next sixteen seasons anchoring left field at Wrigley Field, developing into one of the National League's most consistent hitters. The 1961 NL Rookie of the Year, he made six All-Star teams and set an NL record by playing in 1,117 consecutive games between 1963 and 1970. Nicknamed “Sweet Swingin' Billy from Whistler” for his fluid left-handed stroke and Alabama hometown, he won the 1972 NL batting title at .333 while leading the majors in total bases and slugging percentage, and finished as MVP runner-up twice, in 1970 and 1972. Traded to Oakland after the 1974 season, Williams appears on this 1975 Topps card as the Athletics' designated hitter, finally reaching the postseason as Oakland won its fifth straight AL West title. He retired in 1976 with 426 home runs, 2,711 hits and a .290 average, and the Cubs retired his No. 26. Williams was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1987.
