About John Knox

John Clinton Knox was born July 26, 1948, in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in Pittsburgh, then Columbus, Ohio, before enrolling at Bowling Green State University. As a senior second baseman there he hit .370 and earned All-MAC first-team and third-team All-America honors in 1970, the year Detroit drafted him in the eighth round. Knox climbed the Tigers' system fast, from Single-A Batavia in 1970 to Double-A Montgomery in 1971 to Triple-A Toledo in 1972, before his August 1, 1972 big-league debut. He spent parts of four seasons in Detroit at second base, playing his fullest big-league stretch in 1974 (.307 in 55 games) and returning for a final season in 1975, the year pictured on his Topps card. He finished with a .274 career average, 60 hits, and 11 RBIs over 124 games, all with the Tigers. Afterward, Knox worked for Alco Aluminum in Toledo and was inducted into the Bowling Green Athletic Hall of Fame in 1977.
