About Carlos May

The Chicago White Sox made Carlos May a first-round pick, 18th overall, out of Birmingham's A.H. Parker High School in 1966, and by 1969 the 21-year-old left fielder was an All-Star, finishing third in AL Rookie of the Year voting behind Lou Piniella. That August, while fulfilling Marine Corps Reserve duty at Camp Pendleton, a mortar shell exploded and partially amputated his right thumb, forcing him to rebuild his swing. He fought back to a regular job in Chicago's outfield, made a second All-Star team in 1972, and set career highs of 20 home runs and 96 RBIs in 1973. Teammates called him "Tank" for his stocky, 5-foot-11, 200-pound frame. He and older brother Lee May made history in the 1969 All-Star Game as the first brothers to face each other in the contest. This 1975 Topps card, #480, captures his final full season on the South Side before a May 1976 trade sent him to the Yankees, who went on to the World Series that fall.
