About Don Stanhouse
Don Stanhouse arrived in pro ball as a first-round bet on his all-around athleticism, taken by the Oakland Athletics with the ninth pick of the 1969 draft out of Du Quoin, Illinois as a third baseman. A minor-league manager convinced him to switch to the mound, and Oakland traded him to the expansion Texas Rangers before he ever threw a big-league pitch. Stanhouse debuted for Texas on April 19, 1972, spending three seasons shuttling between the rotation and bullpen there, the club and role pictured on his 1975 Topps card. That December he went to Montreal, then in 1977 to Baltimore, where manager Earl Weaver turned him into a shutdown closer. Weaver, chain-smoking through Stanhouse's white-knuckle saves, dubbed him "Full Pack"; teammate Mike Flanagan called him "Stan the Man Unusual." Stanhouse made the 1979 All-Star team and helped the Orioles to the pennant and World Series that fall before an injury-shortened run with the Dodgers ended his career in 1982, finishing with 64 saves and a 3.84 ERA over ten big-league seasons.
