1975 Topps #492 Rich Hebner

About Rich Hebner
Richard "Richie" Hebner was Pittsburgh's first-round pick (15th overall) in the 1966 draft out of Norwood High School, converted from shortstop to third base in the minors before debuting in September 1968. He anchored the Pirates' left side for eight seasons, part of clubs that won five NL East titles between 1970 and 1975 and the 1971 World Series. His signature run came in the 1971 NLCS, where he homered off Juan Marichal to win Game Three and off Gaylord Perry to tie Game Four, then delivered the Pirates' only runs off Jim Palmer in Game Two of the World Series. He set a career high with 25 home runs in 1973, capped by a walk-off inside-the-park shot against St. Louis. Off the field he earned the nickname "Gravedigger," shortened by teammates to "Digger," for digging graves each offseason at the Norwood, Massachusetts cemeteries his father supervised - a job he kept for decades. This #492 card catches him in his Pittsburgh prime; he later played for the Phillies, Mets, Tigers and Cubs, retiring in 1985 with a .276 average, 203 home runs and 890 RBI.
