About Doug Griffin

Doug Griffin held down second base for the Boston Red Sox from 1971 to 1975, prized more for his glove than his bat — a .245 career hitter with just seven home runs, he won the American League Gold Glove at second base in 1972. The Angels had drafted him in the 21st round in 1965; after 18 games in Anaheim in 1970, a six-player trade that sent outfielder Tony Conigliaro west brought him to Boston. He was the Red Sox's regular second baseman during their 1975 pennant drive, pictured with the club on his 1975 Topps #454 card, though a June trade for Denny Doyle limited him to a reserve role and just a brief World Series appearance against Cincinnati. Two frightening beanings marked his career — a 1974 Nolan Ryan fastball left him with a concussion and temporary hearing loss, and an Oakland pitch repeated the ordeal in 1975. Griffin played his last big-league game in 1977 and died in 2016 at age 69.
