1975 Topps #455 Don Wilson

About Don Wilson
Don Wilson signed with the Houston Colt .45s organization out of Compton Junior College in 1964 and reached the majors in September 1966, debuting with a relief win over Cincinnati. The hard-throwing right-hander anchored the Astros rotation for nine seasons, no-hitting the Braves at the Astrodome on June 18, 1967 — a 15-strikeout gem that ended with a strikeout of his boyhood idol, Hank Aaron — and no-hitting the Reds on May 1, 1969, a day after Cincinnati's Jim Maloney had no-hit Houston, only the second time in major-league history that two teams traded no-hitters on consecutive days. Wilson's best season came in 1971: a 16-10 record, a career-best 2.45 ERA, his only All-Star selection, and Astros MVP honors. He finished 104-92 with a 3.15 ERA and 1,283 strikeouts, all with Houston, before dying of carbon monoxide poisoning at age 29 on January 5, 1975. His 1975 Topps card, issued after his death, stands as his final Topps issue; the Astros have since retired his No. 40.
