About Jim Spencer
Jim Spencer broke into the majors with the California Angels in September 1968, three years after they made him the first pick of baseball's inaugural 1965 amateur draft. By 1970 his sure hands at first base made him one of the American League's top glove men, earning his first Gold Glove. Traded to Texas in May 1973, Spencer was hitting .300 when he made the AL All-Star team, then split time between first base and DH in Arlington through the 1975 season pictured on this Topps card. He added a second Gold Glove with the 1977 White Sox and, with the Yankees from 1978 to 1981, collected two hits in the 1978 World Series and set a career high with 23 home runs in 1979. Spencer closed his 15-year career with Oakland in 1982, retiring with the highest career fielding percentage of any first baseman to that point. He died of a heart attack in February 2002, a night after playing in a charity game for Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital.
