About Steve Stone

Steve Stone pitched at Kent State University, where future major leaguer Thurman Munson caught for him, before the San Francisco Giants took him in 1969 after Cleveland had failed to sign him the year before. He reached the majors with the Giants in 1971, was traded to the crosstown Chicago White Sox that November, then went to the Cubs on December 11, 1973, part of a deal that sent catcher Steve Swisher and pitchers Ken Frailing and Jim Kremmel to Chicago's North Side for third baseman Ron Santo. His 1975 Topps card catches him in his second Cubs season, in which he went 12-8 with a 3.95 ERA over 214⅓ innings. Stone later returned to the White Sox before signing with Baltimore in 1979, where he broke through with a 25-7 season in 1980 that earned him the American League Cy Young Award, an All-Star nod, and three perfect innings in that year's All-Star Game. A restaurateur during his career, he was dubbed the "Galloping Gourmet" by Chicago newspapers. He went on to a long run as a Cubs and White Sox television broadcaster and is not in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
