1975 Topps #524 John Doherty

About John Doherty
John Michael Doherty was born August 22, 1951, in Woburn, Massachusetts, and starred at Reading Memorial High School, where the Pittsburgh Pirates drafted him in the fifth round in 1969. He didn't sign, and instead the California Angels made him the 7th overall pick of the 1970 January secondary-phase draft. A left-handed-hitting first baseman, Doherty worked through the Angels' system at El Paso, Shreveport, and Salt Lake City, batting .309 with 64 RBI for the Pacific Coast League club in 1973 to force a look. He debuted June 1, 1974, against Detroit and became California's regular first baseman as a rookie, hitting .256 with three homers in 74 games. A part-time role followed in 1975, and his final big-league game came that July 30 against Chicago. In two seasons he batted .240 with four home runs and 27 RBI in 104 games before finishing his career in the Angels', Padres', Red Sox', and Tigers' minor-league systems through 1978. His only Topps card, #524 in the 1975 set, is his recognized rookie.
