1975 Topps #523 Tom Paciorek

About Tom Paciorek
Tom Paciorek's 1975 Topps card catches him in a Los Angeles Dodgers uniform for the final season before a trade to Atlanta — a versatile outfielder-first baseman the Dodgers drafted in the fifth round in 1968 out of the University of Houston, where he'd also starred at defensive back. After earning The Sporting News' Triple-A Player of the Year award in 1972, he served as a dependable fourth outfielder and pinch hitter from 1973-1975, helping the Dodgers reach the 1974 World Series. Dealt to Atlanta that November, Paciorek moved through the Braves, Mariners, White Sox, Mets and Rangers, finally breaking out at 34 in 1981 with a .326 average — second-best in the American League — his only All-Star selection, and a 10th-place AL MVP finish for Seattle. With the White Sox in 1984 he went 5-for-9 as a substitute during the 25-inning marathon against Milwaukee, the longest game in major-league history by time, still a record for a non-starter. Teammates called him "Wimpy," a nickname Tommy Lasorda hung on him after he ordered a hamburger instead of steak at a minor league dinner; Paciorek later spent years as a White Sox broadcaster alongside Ken Harrelson.
