About Gary Sutherland
Gary Sutherland arrived in pro ball as a USC All-American under Rod Dedeaux, having represented the United States in the demonstration baseball event at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics before the Phillies signed him to a bonus contract that November. He debuted with Philadelphia in 1966, then became the Montreal Expos' first starting second baseman in 1969, scoring the expansion team's first run and recording the first putout by a team in a regular-season MLB game on Canadian soil. Detroit acquired him from Houston in a December 1973 trade for Fred Scherman, with Tigers scout Jack Tighe rating his glovework on the double play alongside Bill Mazeroski's. Sutherland won the Tigers' second-base job in 1974, leading the American League with 489 outs, and held it again in 1975, batting .258 over 129 games. He finished his 13-season career in 1978 with 754 hits over stops in Milwaukee, San Diego, and St. Louis, later serving as a special assistant to the Angels' general manager from 1999 to 2011.
