About Larry Haney

Wallace Larry Haney grew up on a farm in Barboursville, Virginia, and turned down a football scholarship to Virginia Tech when the Baltimore Orioles signed him for a $60,000 bonus out of high school. The club converted him from third base and shortstop into a full-time catcher, and he debuted July 27, 1966, homering in his second big-league at-bat off John O'Donoghue — the only Oriole to go deep in his own debut game until Jonathan Schoop in 2013. A defense-first backup who threw out 39 percent of basestealers, Haney played for the Orioles, Pilots/Brewers, A's, and Cardinals from 1966-1978, winning World Series rings with the 1966 Orioles and 1974 A's. His 1975 Topps card, #626, actually pictures teammate Dave Duncan, an uncorrected photo mix-up typical of the set. After retiring as a player, Haney coached Milwaukee's bullpen and pitching staff into the early 1990s, part of 46 years in pro ball; he called watching son Chris pitch in the majors his proudest moment in the game.
