About Tom Walker

Tom Walker pitched alongside future Hall of Famer Steve Garvey at Tampa's Chamberlain High and was drafted ninth overall by Baltimore in 1968. Contemplating retirement in Double-A, he threw a 15-inning no-hitter for Dallas-Fort Worth on August 4, 1971, staying in at manager Cal Ripken Sr.'s insistence; Montreal claimed him in that winter's Rule 5 draft. Walker debuted for the Expos on April 23, 1972, and worked the bullpen through 1974, winning seven games in 1973 behind Mike Marshall. His 1975 Topps card (#627) shows him with Montreal even though the Expos had already traded him to Detroit for Woodie Fryman that December; with the Tigers he beat Jim Kaat 2-1 in a complete game he called his best. He spent 1976 in the Cardinals' system, then closed out 1977 with a second Expos stint and California, finishing 18-23 with a 3.87 ERA and 262 strikeouts. Walker later credited Roberto Clemente, his Puerto Rican winter-ball manager, with saving his life by keeping him off the December 31, 1972 relief flight to Nicaragua that crashed.
