1975 Topps #628 Ron LeFlore

About Ron LeFlore
Ron LeFlore's path to the majors is one of baseball's most remarkable redemption stories. Convicted of armed robbery in 1970, he was serving a 5-to-15-year sentence at Jackson State Prison when a fellow inmate arranged a tryout with Tigers manager Billy Martin, who visited the prison and helped LeFlore win parole to sign with Detroit in July 1973. He debuted August 1, 1974, and took over as Detroit's starting center fielder in 1975 — the year of his Topps rookie card. A prototypical leadoff man, he made the 1976 All-Star team, batted .325 in 1977, and led the American League in runs and stolen bases in 1978. Traded to Montreal in 1980, he swiped a career-high 97 bases, becoming the first player to lead both leagues in steals. He finished his career with the White Sox in 1982, retiring with 455 stolen bases and a .288 average. His story inspired the 1978 CBS movie One in a Million: The Ron LeFlore Story, starring LeVar Burton.
