About Joe Hoerner

Joseph Walter Hoerner was a left-handed sidearm reliever from Dubuque, Iowa, who overcame heart-related blackouts on the mound during a rough minor league apprenticeship before reaching the majors with the Houston Colt .45s in 1963. Drafted by St. Louis in the 1965 Rule 5 draft, he became a key bullpen weapon for pennant-winning Cardinals clubs, posting a 19-10 record with 59 saves and a 2.10 ERA from 1966-69, and picking up a win and a save across two World Series, including the 1967 champions. Dealt to Philadelphia in the Curt Flood trade after the 1969 season, he earned his lone All-Star selection in 1970 and posted a 1.97 ERA in 1971. He closed his 14-year, seven-team career with the Royals (1973-74), Rangers, and Reds, finishing 39-34 with 98 saves and a 2.99 ERA in 493 games, all in relief. His 1975 Topps card catches him with Kansas City, the club he pitched for as 1974 closed out even as Topps' presses ran before his subsequent return to Philadelphia.
