1975 Topps #625 Boog Powell

About Boog Powell
John Wesley "Boog" Powell signed with Baltimore as an amateur free agent in 1959 out of Key West High School, and the burly first baseman anchored the Orioles' dynasty for the better part of fifteen seasons. He broke in with Baltimore in 1961, moved from left field to first base in 1965, and became the middle-of-the-order power source behind Frank and Brooks Robinson through four pennants and two World Series titles (1966, 1970). Powell led the American League with a .606 slugging percentage in 1964, made four straight All-Star teams (1968-71), and capped a career year in 1970 with 35 homers, 114 RBIs and the AL MVP award, homering in each of the first two games of that fall's World Series win over Cincinnati. He got his nickname "Boog" from his father, who shortened the Southern term "boogers" for mischievous kids. Powell finished with 339 home runs, third on the Orioles' all-time list, and was inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame in 1979. His 1970 MVP season earns him a spot on card #208 alongside that year's NL MVP, in addition to his regular-issue #625.
