About Luis Tiant

Luis Tiant began his pro career in 1959 with the Mexico City Tigers before Cleveland purchased his contract in 1961; the Cuban right-hander then found himself unable to return home once Castro sealed the island, and did not see his parents again for 14 years. He debuted for the Indians in 1964 by shutting out the Yankees on four hits, and by 1968 authored one of the great pitching seasons on record: a league-best 1.60 ERA and a still-standing AL single-game strikeout mark. Arm trouble nearly finished him, but Tiant reinvented himself in Boston with a corkscrewing, look-away delivery, winning 20 games in 1973 and making the 1974 All-Star team on a 22-win season. Card #430 in the 1975 Topps set catches him off that year, months before his parents were finally allowed out of Cuba to watch him pitch at Fenway and he threw three complete-game gems, including a Game 1 shutout, in that fall's World Series. Fans chanted "Loo-ie, Loo-ie" for El Tiante the rest of his Red Sox career. He finished 229-172 with 2,416 strikeouts and 49 shutouts, more than any pitcher outside Cooperstown, and remains one of the most beloved Red Sox ever without induction.
