1975 Topps #431 Rod Gilbreath

About Rod Gilbreath
Rod Gilbreath grew up in Laurel, Mississippi, playing at Watkins High School before Atlanta made him a third-round pick in the 1970 draft. He debuted in the majors at 19 in June 1972 after climbing from the Double-A Savannah Braves, then split the next two seasons between Atlanta and Triple-A Richmond. His 1975 Topps card, #431, caught him in the season he finally exceeded rookie limits, when he logged 90 games as Atlanta's second baseman. He held down the position for four full seasons, topping 100 games each year from 1976 to 1978, and led the National League with 20 sacrifice hits in 1976. Gilbreath closed his seven-year career with a .248 average, 14 home runs and 125 RBI, all with the Braves, then remained in the organization for decades as a scout and player-development executive.
