About Jim Dwyer
Jim Dwyer's 1975 Topps card (#429) is his rookie card, picturing him with the St. Louis Cardinals, the team that drafted him in the 11th round out of Southern Illinois University in 1971 and brought him to the majors on June 10, 1973. A left-handed pull hitter with a knack for fastballs, Dwyer bounced between the Cardinals, Expos, and Mets before settling into the reserve/pinch-hit role that defined his 18-year career. He found his greatest success with the Baltimore Orioles (1981-88), where he set a franchise record with nine pinch-hit homers and helped Baltimore win the 1983 World Series, homering off John Denny in his first Series at-bat. Dwyer retired in 1990 with a .260 average, 77 home runs, and 103 career pinch hits, tied for 17th all-time. Bill James later ranked him #4 on his list of the greatest bench players in history. He spent decades afterward as a hitting coach in the Twins organization, mostly with the Fort Myers Miracle.
