About Roger Metzger

Roger Henry Metzger, a switch-hitting shortstop out of Fredericksburg, Texas, was the Chicago Cubs' first-round pick (16th overall) in the 1969 draft out of St. Edward's University. He debuted for Chicago in 1970 before becoming Houston's regular shortstop from 1971 through 1978, prized for his slick glove and speed over his bat. He led the National League in triples twice, with 11 in 1971 and 14 in 1973, and that same season won the Gold Glove at shortstop — the first for an Astro at the position, a feat the franchise wouldn't repeat there for 48 years. His 1975 Topps card catches him the year after a frightening pregame collision with pitcher Don Wilson left him unconscious and swallowing his tongue; teammates Johnny Edwards and Doug Rader revived him, and the Astros rallied to score 18 runs that night in his honor. He closed his career with the Giants in 1980 after a table-saw accident cost him four fingertips, finishing with 972 hits and a .231 average over 11 seasons.
