About Pete Broberg

Peter Sven Broberg, a hard-throwing Dartmouth College right-hander, went straight from campus to the majors after turning down a reported $175,000 bonus from the Oakland Athletics, who had made him the No. 2 overall pick in 1968. Instead the Washington Senators took him first overall in the secondary phase of the 1971 draft, and Broberg debuted for Washington on June 20, 1971, without pitching an inning in the minors. When the franchise relocated to Arlington in 1972, he became part of Texas Rangers history, winning the club's first-ever game on April 16 and throwing its first shutout six days later. Broberg pitched for the Rangers through 1974; his 1975 Topps card (#542) still shows him in Texas colors, though he'd already been traded to the Milwaukee Brewers that December for Clyde Wright. His best season followed with Milwaukee in 1975, a 14-16 mark with a 4.13 ERA. He closed his career with the Cubs and Athletics, finishing 41-71 with a 4.56 ERA and 536 strikeouts over eight big-league seasons.
