About Larry Biittner

Lawrence David Biittner, born July 27, 1946, in Pocahontas, Iowa, was a left-handed-hitting outfielder and first baseman who spent 14 seasons in the majors from 1970 to 1983. A tenth-round pick of the Washington Senators in 1968 out of Buena Vista College, he broke in with Washington/Texas that year and was traded to the Montreal Expos in December 1973. His 1975 Topps card catches him mid-Expos tenure, the same season he hit .315 — tops on the club — with 109 hits and 28 RBIs. Traded to the Chicago Cubs in 1976, he delivered his best all-around year in 1977, batting .298 with career highs of 12 home runs and 62 RBIs, twice falling a single hit short of the cycle. He closed his career with Cincinnati and Texas, finishing with a .273 average, 861 hits and 29 home runs over 1,217 games, remembered as one of the era's most durable pinch hitters and platoon players before returning to farm in his native Iowa.
