About Al Grunwald
Alfred Henry Grunwald broke into pro ball in 1947 as a first baseman in the Pittsburgh Pirates chain, spending seven seasons at the position before converting to the mound in 1954. That year he helped the Class B Waco Pirates to the Big State League pennant, batting .292 while going 4-1 as a pitcher. The 6-foot-4 southpaw, nicknamed "Stretch," debuted for Pittsburgh on April 18, 1955, and became the only pitcher in major league history to surrender the cycle in his first inning of work. After four more minor league seasons he resurfaced with the Kansas City Athletics in 1959, going 0-1 in six games. Grunwald logged 13 minor league campaigns (1947-1961), posting a 41-31 pitching record plus a .295 average and 111 home runs, and closed his playing days with Japan's Taiyo Whales in 1962. His 1960 Topps card, #427, captures that lone A's season as a recognized rookie card issued in Topps' Series 5 print run, found with a scarcer white-back or more common gray-back variation.
