About Bill Henry

Bill Henry was a left-handed relief pitcher who turned pro in 1948 with the Class C Clarksdale Planters, then worked through four modest minor-league seasons before Boston purchased his contract for 1952. After stints with the Red Sox (1952-55) and Chicago Cubs (1958-59), he was traded to Cincinnati in December 1959 with Lou Jackson and Lee Walls for Frank Thomas — a deal that launched his best years. Card #524 catches him in that first Reds season, a short-printed high number from the scarce 507-572 series: in 1960 Henry became Cincinnati's closer, saving 17 games and earning selection to both 1960 All-Star Games. He helped the Reds to their first pennant in 21 years in 1961, saving 16 games and pitching in two World Series games against the Yankees. In 1964 he posted a sparkling 0.87 ERA. Teammates nicknamed him "Gabby" for his famously quiet nature. He pitched until age 41, closing out a 16-year career with the Giants, Pirates and Astros.
