1960 Topps #544 Bill Monbouquette

About Bill Monbouquette
Bill Monbouquette signed with his hometown Red Sox out of Medford High School in June 1955 and, after four minor-league seasons, debuted for Boston on July 18, 1958. The hard-throwing right-hander anchored Boston's rotation through 1965, then closed out his career with Detroit, the Yankees, and San Francisco through 1968, finishing 114-112 with 1,122 strikeouts. A four-time All-Star, he won 20 games in 1963 — fourth-most in the league — and set a Red Sox record by striking out 17 Washington Senators in 1961, a mark that stood until Roger Clemens' 20-strikeout game in 1986. His signature moment came August 1, 1962, when he no-hit the White Sox 1-0 at Comiskey Park, allowing only a second-inning walk; Boston met his flight home with a fire-engine parade. Teammates and writers knew him as "Monbo," a nickname born of a French surname that routinely defeated broadcasters and box-score typesetters. Card #544 placed him in Topps' scarce, short-printed 1960 high-number series (#507-572); his true rookie card had come the year before, in 1959 Topps. He was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2000.
