About Billy Hoeft

Billy Hoeft broke in with the Detroit Tigers in 1952 after turning down a signing bonus to control his own development, having already built a legendary amateur résumé in Oshkosh, Wisconsin — three high school no-hitters, a 34-game winning streak, and one outing in which he struck out all 27 batters he faced. The tall left-hander became a Tigers mainstay, making the 1955 All-Star team and going 20-14 in 1956, his best season. On September 7, 1953, he threw an immaculate inning against the Chicago White Sox, the first in the majors since 1928. Traded to Boston in 1959, he landed in Baltimore weeks later and settled into a relief role for the Orioles, posting a career-best 2.02 ERA in 1961. His 1960 Topps card, #369, catches him mid-career with the Orioles, the club he'd pitch for through 1962. Hoeft pitched 15 big-league seasons for six clubs, finishing 97-101 with 1,140 strikeouts before his death in 2010.
