1960 Topps #368 Daryl Spencer

About Daryl Spencer
Daryl Spencer arrived in St. Louis in a December 1959 blockbuster, sent by the Giants with outfielder Leon Wagner for second baseman Don Blasingame, and manager Solly Hemus installed him as the Cardinals' starting shortstop for 1960 -- the card shown here. A 6-foot-2 slugger nicknamed "Big Dee" for his size and power, Spencer broke in with the Giants in 1952, missed two seasons to military service, and became San Francisco's regular shortstop from 1956-58, hitting the first home run in San Francisco Giants history off Don Drysdale on Opening Day 1958. For the 1960 Cardinals he delivered 16 homers, a team-high 81 walks and a .365 on-base percentage as St. Louis finished third. Traded to the Dodgers in 1961, he closed his 10-year, 105-homer big-league career in 1963, then starred for Japan's Hankyu Braves through 1972, twice winning the Best Nine Award and belting 152 more home runs -- a power bat that carried across two continents.
