1960 Topps #367 Bill Tuttle

About Bill Tuttle
Bill Tuttle starred at Bradley University before signing with the Detroit Tigers, breaking in with a seven-game trial in 1952. He won the center-field job in 1954 alongside rookie Al Kaline, and manager Fred Hutchinson dubbed the pair "the jackrabbits" for their range. Tuttle's best season came in 1955, when he played all 154 games and set career highs with 14 homers, 78 RBIs and 102 runs while leading AL outfielders in putouts. A 13-player trade sent him to the Kansas City Athletics after 1957, and he was KC's regular center fielder from 1958 into mid-1961 — the club shown on this 1960 card — hitting a career-best .300 in 1959 and again leading AL outfielders in putouts in 1960. Over 11 seasons he batted .259 with 67 homers and 443 RBIs. Long pictured with a chaw of tobacco in his cheek, a habit picked up from a Tigers teammate, Tuttle later developed oral cancer, underwent disfiguring surgery, and spent his final years touring with Joe Garagiola's campaign against spit tobacco before his 1998 death. He is not in the Hall of Fame.
