About Dallas Green

Dallas Green's 1960 Topps card (#366) — one of the set's key rookies — arrived the same season the 6-foot-5 right-hander broke in with the Phillies, signed by scout Jocko Collins off a 6-0, 0.88 ERA junior year at the University of Delaware. Nicknamed "Spider" in high school for his height and long arms, Green spent parts of eight seasons (1960-67) with Philadelphia, Washington, and the Mets, going 20-22, 4.26 with 268 strikeouts over 185 games as a swingman in the Phillies' rotation and bullpen. His lasting fame came after he hung up his spikes: as Philadelphia's blunt, screaming, cussing manager from 1979-81, he drove the Phillies to their first World Series championship in 1980, then rebuilt the Chicago Cubs as general manager, acquiring a young Ryne Sandberg from Philadelphia and steering Chicago to the 1984 NL East title. Green was inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1983.
