1960 Topps #415 Bob Cerv

Kansas City Athletics · American League · Base set · Series 5 · Card #415 of 572
White / gray back

Cards #375-440 were printed on two back stocks, white and gray. White is the scarcer of the two, and the difference is the tint of the cardboard on the reverse — it is a stock variation, not a design change, so both backs read identically.

About Bob Cerv

Robert Henry Cerv was born May 5, 1925, in Weston, Nebraska, a four-year letterman in baseball and basketball at the University of Nebraska and the school's first baseball All-American. He served as a radarman aboard the destroyer USS Claxton, surviving a kamikaze attack during the Battle of Leyte Gulf that killed five crewmates. Signed by the Yankees, Cerv debuted in 1951 and spent parts of three stints in New York as a bench outfielder behind Woodling, Bauer and Mantle, winning a World Series ring in 1956. Sold to Kansas City that winter, he finally won an everyday job and broke out in 1958: an All-Star left fielder who played much of the season with his jaw wired shut after a home-plate collision, he hit .305 with 38 home runs, a Kansas City Athletics single-season record, and finished fourth in MVP voting. In 1961 he roomed with Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle during their chase of Babe Ruth's home run record. His 1960 Topps card, #415, catches him with the Athletics and exists with either white or gray stock on the back, a high-number Series 5 variation with the white-back version the scarcer find.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-08-20. Half grades fold down for both graders (8.5→8); PSA qualified slabs (OC, ST, PD, MC and the like) are not counted. Neither grader separates the white and gray back stocks on this card, so the counts below cover both. The Venezuelan issue, the 1960 Topps Tattoos and Bazooka are separate products and are not counted here.
