About Camilo Pascual
Camilo Pascual broke into pro ball in 1951, pitching for Class-D and Class-C clubs stocked with fellow Cuban signees of Washington scout Joe Cambria, then signed with the Senators as a free agent in 1952 and debuted in the majors in 1954. Nicknamed "Little Potato" — his older brother and fellow big leaguer Carlos was "Patato," Cuban slang for a short, stocky player, and the name got mistranslated into English as "Potato" — Pascual battled control problems on some of Washington's worst teams before his overhand curveball, which Ted Williams once called the most feared in the American League for 18 years, turned him into an ace. A seven-time All-Star, he led the league in strikeouts three straight seasons (1961–63) and won at least 20 games in both 1962 and 1963. His 1960 Topps cards — the standard #483 issue and the short-printed high-number Sport Magazine '60 All-Star Selection subset — both show him with Washington, the year before the franchise shifted to Minnesota, where Pascual helped the Twins reach the 1965 World Series. He finished with 174 wins and 2,167 strikeouts over 18 seasons and was inducted into the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014.
