About Del Crandall
Del Crandall signed with the Boston Braves out of Fullerton (California) High School in 1948 and reached the majors within a year, debuting June 17, 1949, at age 19 to become the youngest starting catcher in baseball history. After a two-year military hitch during the Korean War, he returned in 1953 as the Braves moved to Milwaukee and seized the regular catcher's job from Walker Cooper, holding it for eight seasons behind Warren Spahn, Lew Burdette and Bob Buhl. An 11-time All-Star, Crandall won four Gold Gloves and led the National League in assists a record-tying six times, in fielding percentage four times and in putouts three times, catching three no-hitters. He helped Milwaukee to pennants in 1957 and 1958, homering in Game 7 of both World Series, and was on the roster when the Braves won it all in 1957. This 1960 Topps set catches him twice, on his base card (#170) and again on the short-printed high-number Sport Magazine All-Star card (#568), one of only 20 players honored in that scarce subset. Crandall later managed the Brewers and Mariners; he was inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame in 2003.
