About Sherm Lollar
Sherm Lollar broke into pro ball with Baltimore's International League club in 1943, and a .364 average and league MVP season in 1945 got him sold to Cleveland, launching an 18-year big-league career. After brief stops with the Indians (1946) and Yankees (1947–48, playing two games in the 1947 World Series against Brooklyn), then three seasons anchoring the Browns (1949–51, where he earned his first All-Star selection), Lollar found a permanent home in 1952 with the Chicago White Sox, catching 100-plus games in each of his twelve seasons there. A seven-time All-Star, he won the first Gold Glove ever awarded a catcher in 1957 and repeated in 1958 and 1959, retiring with what was then the best career fielding percentage (.992) any catcher had posted. Lollar anchored the pitching staff of the pennant-winning 1959 "Go-Go" White Sox and homered off Roger Craig in Game Four of that year's World Series. Never inducted into Cooperstown, he was later named to the White Sox All-Century Team. Card #495 shows him with that '59 pennant club; card #567, from the short-printed high-number Sport Magazine '60 All-Star Selection subset, honors his run of All-Star seasons.
